Edward van de Vendel
Edward van de Vendel (1964) is a Dutch writer and translator of children's books and poetry, and young adult literature. He is the author of picture books such as Vosje (Little Fox, will be published in 2020) and A Dog Like Sam (2011) and the poetry book Super Guppy (2019). After two collections of children’s poetry, he broke through in 1999 with the poetic adaptation of Gijsbrecht, based on the seventeenth-century Dutch classic, for which he was awarded the prestigious Gouden Zoen. Several other books by van de Vendel were awarded the Zilveren Griffel award for children's literature. His acclaimed young adult novel Dagen van Bluegrassliefde (1999) will be published in English in 2021.
In his children's books, Van de Vendel tries to achieve a synthesis of an adult's demands (originality, engaging language and style) and a child's wishes (a book has to be gripping and funny). He collaborated with Marije Tolman on Vosje, for which they were awarded the Zilveren Penseel.
