History Shaped Lives: Marsha Lederman & Pieter Waterdrinker
Join Canadian Arts Correspondent Marsha Lederman and Dutch novelist Pieter Waterdrinker for a discussion on cultural upheavals in history and their personal effects on their lives today.
Lederman’s Kiss the Red Stairs delves into her parents’ Holocaust stories in the wake of her own divorce, investigating how trauma migrates through generations with empathy, humour and resilience. Waterdrinker was born in the Netherlands and moved to Russia in the late 1980s, where his personal memoir, The Long Song of Tchaikovsky Street, begins when a priest asks him to smuggle Bibles into the Soviet Union. Waterdrinker finds himself still in Saint Petersburg after 30 years, having lived through a social and cultural revolution that divided Russia.
