Damsels Not Distressed - Annet Schaap & Oein DeBhairduin

There’ll be no damsels in distress in this unsettling foray into dark tales and reimagined legends that feature young women who definitely don’t need to be rescued.

Join Dutch author Annet Schaap and Irish author and Traveller Oein DeBhairduin for a spooky storytelling session that will take the traditional tales you know and love and transform them into eerie, enchanting stories for the modern world. Full of dreams, desires, and darkness, these two master storytellers will draw you into the shadows and illuminate the darkest corners of the mind.

Young Adult and New Adult fans of mythology, folklore, and fantasy will be captured by Annet’s The Girls and Oein’s Twiggy Woman, which draw on fairytale and Irish Traveller traditions to reimagine long beloved stories with bold, brave heroines at the helm.

Annet Schaap’s debut novel Lampie won four prizes in the Netherlands and Flanders, including the Golden Pencil for the best Dutch children’s book of the year; it was translated into twenty languages and was the first translated book to ever be shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal.

Oein DeBhairduin is the author of the award-winning Why the moon travels. His other works are WeaveThe Slug and the Snail and Twiggy Woman. He is the Traveller Culture Collections Development Officer with the National Museum of Ireland and seeks to pair community activism with cultural celebration.

This event will be chaired by Janet Smyth.

Presented with the support of New Dutch Writing.
