Identity and Womanhood:

Readings and conversation with Simone Atangana Bekono, Radna Fabias and their translator David Colmer at Ledbury Poetry Festival

The vitality of contemporary Dutch poetry is nowhere better experienced than through the work of Simone Atangana Bekono and Radna Fabias. Simone Atangana Bekono’s poems explore myth, history, identity and womanhood through a fascinating collage of voices and imagery in her debut chapbook How the first sparks became visible (tr. David Colmer). Radna Fabias combines montage-like depictions of life on Curaçao, (an island in the Caribbean Sea and a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands), with a young woman’s perspective in her award-winning debut Habitus (tr. David Colmer). The poets will read from their work and then be in conversation with their celebrated translator, David Colmer, to explore the pleasures and challenges of bringing their multi-layered and culturally varied poems to life in English. Chaired by Martin Colthorpe, Programmer of New Dutch Writing.
